COLUMBINE SCHOOL MATRIX CONNECTION
Following the April 20, 1999, Columbine High School shooting, media and investigators noted that killers Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold wore long black trench coats similar to those worn by Neo in The Matrix. Released just weeks before, the film’s stylized violence and tech-inspired aesthetic were scrutinized as potential influences on the shooters, who were dubbed the “Trench Coat Mafia“.

The Connection: The shooters were known to admire the film and wore similar, dark, long coats during the attack, prompting media speculation about The Matrix being an influence.
Media Panic: The shooting intensified debates about violence in popular culture, including movies and video games.
COLUMBINE SHOOTING AND MUSIC:
KMFDM’s role
KMFDM was another band linked to Columbine because the shooters had listened to it, and at least one of Harris’s journal entries mentioned the group. But listening to KMFDM was not evidence that the band caused the attack; the band publicly condemned the shooting and denied any connection.
Marilyn Manson’s role
Marilyn Manson got much more of the blame than KMFDM because he was already a controversial public figure, so people treated him as an easy symbol for violence and youth rebellion. He repeatedly denied responsibility and said blaming music ignored the real causes of the attack.
For the female school shooter angle, the 2024 Wisconsin school shooter Natalie Rupnow was reported to have worn a KMFDM shirt, which led journalists to connect her image back to Columbine-era symbolism. Reporting said that shirt may have signaled fascination with Columbine and other school shootings, not that KMFDM caused her violence.
